Youth rams police cruiser

An 18-year-old man is in jail for allegedly ramming a police cruiser with a stolen vehicle.

Ellery Roesch Crews, of the 500 block of East Evans Avenue, was arrested early Thursday on suspicion of auto theft and assault on a peace officer. He is in jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Pueblo police officer Raymond Purvis was on patrol at Northern and Acero avenues at 12:35 a.m. Thursday, when he saw two men chasing another man on foot.

Purvis followed in his cruiser, and the two chasers retreated toward Mount View Cemetery. One of the suspects escaped. The other was later identified as Crews, according to an arrest affidavit by Purvis.

At the entrance to the cemetery, Purvis saw Crews get into the driver's side of a Ford Bronco that had been reported stolen 40 minutes earlier from the 300 block of West Summit Avenue.

Purvis activated the emergency lights on his cruiser and blocked the Bronco from exiting the cemetery. Crews then allegedly drove the Bronco into the front end of Purvis' cruiser in an apparent attempt to squeeze past it.

Crews exited the Bronco and ran from the scene, leaving three juvenile males behind to face the police. The three juveniles were booked at Pueblo Youth Center on suspicion of auto theft. They told police they had accepted a ride from two strangers in the Bronco.

Police followed footprints from the cemetery to the 500 block of East Evans, where they arrested Crews.

He also told police that he was offered a ride by a stranger who was driving the Bronco. Nobody was seriously hurt when the Bronco rammed the cruiser.
