A vacant rental property was gutted of its copper pipe.

This time, the thieves showed some compassion.

The home in the 0-99 block of Carmen Place owned by Lucia Hernandez did not incur as much damage as some targeted rentals have during a recent string of copper thefts. This time, the thieves took time to shut off the water supply line to the home before making off with its copper pipes, according to a report by Pueblo police officer Michael Mares.

In recent months, vacant rental properties have been prime targets for copper thieves. In many instances, the thieves have taken copper pipes, leaving water to run uninterrupted until their crimes were discovered, often days later.

The culprits this time apparently entered the house through a tiny opening in a basement window before using bolt cutters to remove $600 worth of pipe from the basement and upstairs.

The damage was discovered Friday, and occurred sometime during the past week.
