Instead of a key, a burglar used a Kia to break into a South Side pawnshop early Thursday.

Jewelry and tools worth between $500 and $15,000 were stolen from EZ Pawn, 3130 W. Northern Ave., according to Pueblo police officer Gary Wyberg's report. Damage to the store was also estimated at between $500 and $15,000.

Police responded to the shop at 6:10 a.m., after getting reports of a burglary alarm that was activated there.

When officers arrived, they found that a 2004 Kia Optima had been driven through the store's front doors, and was completely inside the shop. The car had been reported stolen late Wednesday.

Three glass display cases containing jewelry and tools were broken, and their contents were missing.

Surveillance video from the pawnshop showed the car crashing through the front doors. Its driver, a man, got out and smashed three display cases. He stole their contents and exited the store before police arrived.

An inspector from the Pueblo Regional Building Department determined the building was structurally sound despite the crash. Damage to the car was estimated at $9,000.
