Copper thieves hit burned home

Thieves broke into an East Side home and stole copper piping twice over the weekend.

Steven Abeyta told police that a fire-damaged house he's working on in the 700 block of East Seventh Street was hit by copper thieves Saturday and Sunday.

The house was badly damaged in a July 14 blaze, according to officer Benjamin Muniz's report. On Saturday, various lengths of copper pipe were reported stolen from the basement. The value was reported at $100.

After that Abeyta nailed the basement door shut and secured it with a padlock, officer Donnie Lambert reported.

At 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Abeyta returned to the house and found the basement door open and 40 feet of copper tubing, valued at $450, missing.

Police have suspects.
